Synæsthesia has been an interest of mine for a while. “Seeing sounds”, as N.E.R.D. put it in their latest album, describes the experience of visions of colour listeners have whilst listening to music which is particularly emotive to them. This is a phenomenon which can be seen throughout the history of music, and as animator Harry Smith put it he “literally saw all kinds of colored flashes” when listening to Dizzie Gillespie. His works are said to be an expression of this phenomenon.
